On World Mental Health Day, let’s think of how to improve our workplaces

World Mental Health Day was this week and has highlighted the fact that workplace wellbeing should be high on any office manager’s agenda.

And when I spoke last week at the Future of the Workplace Conference in London, I found delegates in these challenging times were keen to see the way forward for their workforce.

Our workplace is changing faster than we are sometimes able to assimilate and respond to, driven by productivity pressures, technology, sustainability and rising costs.

The digital revolution is driving smart working but there is a lot of wasted investment through poor choices and a lack of alignment with company culture.

Technology, a key enabler in creating a healthy and flexible workplace, still operates in silos. Improving integration will be key to creating a working environment capable of delivering the user experience clients now expect – an amazing 70% of tech projects do not deliver.

Mobility and co-working will be key to delivery of the smart workplace that works for the new user community, creating collaboration and improving productivity.

Many organisations are not putting enough attention on the ‘soft’ issues such as ambience in the modern office that drive both efficiency and staff retention.

We need to take a leaf out of the book of some of the leading companies. They’re addressing these issues with the help of meeting and resource scheduling technology – and they’re keeping staff happy so they keep on winning the talent battle.

We can all learn from that.
